MS Word includes a great feature called figure captions that enables you to link text content to graphics content. I did not see any obvious provision for this in DOORS. Is there a way to handle captions within DOORS? If not, are there some guidelines for using DOORS that makes it easy to insert captions after export to MS Word?

I did find out that there is a way to map MS Word styles during import and that this map can be saved, but I did not see a method to create a map if the document originated in DOORS. I tried making an attribute called "Paragraph Style", but this just printed the style out in MS Word. It seems that having the ability to se ta paragraph style attribute would be a simple solution, but I can't figure out how to create a map during export.

I looked at wexp, which is apparently an old script that handled some of the document export in previous versions. Though potentially compatible, this script does not appear to be supported in current versions of DOORS.

To use the styes in Attribute 'Paragraph Style' you have to use a word template that has all of the styles defined -- with no errors.
Use this word template during export.
The other method that I plan to try is to demote the Object to the lowest level and then use the "Allow Mapping" to map level 9 Object Text to the MS Word Caption. This seems like a kludge as I would have to demote to a low level and reserve level 9 for figures and tables, but I hope it works.
I am starting to look at a progam called Cradle from 3SL that seems to handle this much easier and also has a "Sanitize" option that lets me work on one document then choose to export internal or external release versions.

I tried adding a paragraph style attribute to one of my objects by Tools>Support Tools>Edit Paragraph Style Attribute and then setting "Caption" for the style of the Object Header and Object Text. Then I exported the document to Word, using the check box for Use Paragraph Style Attribute. This does not appear to work so far.

You may have a problem if you set the Object Heading style as the exporter applies the Word heading style appropriate to the heading level.
We keep life simple by not having text in both the Object Heading and Object Text attributes of an object.
Double check that a space has not crept into your 'Caption' style entry, it MUST match exactly what you have in the Word template.
It's also useful to define your own caption styles (even if derived from the inbuilt one) so you can distinguish between pictures, figures and tables if required.
